FULL MOON CHAPTER 8:

ALONE

Hazel McCarthy was a senior citizen. It had been a few years since her husband had passed away, and since then she had been living alone with her devoted dog, Max. She never had any children, which was exactly how she wanted it, as she lacked the patience necessary to nurture connections with other people, even kids. The only ‘person’ that she really cared about was Max, and because he was a dog, he performed whatever she asked of him, just the way she liked.

She did not take much interest in other people, not because she had any ill will toward them, but simply because she did not cherish their company or engage in their small talk. She was rarely spotted in town as she enjoyed the seclusion of her farmhouse and would only go into town when absolutely necessary.

Hazel was not, in contrast to most people her age, prepared to go to bed just yet. From the comfort of her armchair, she sipped her go-to beverage, Guinness beer, while watching reruns of classic comedies. Max sat down next to her, and on the opposite side of him, Hazel’s shotgun was propped. Even though she did not spend much time in town, she was not oblivious to the events that were taking place there. She had learnt to shoot from her husband, which was a talent that had proven essential for taking care of crops and frightening away wild animals. If, by any chance, the animal terrorizing the town came after her, she was prepared.

Hazel fell asleep after a while. The TV had stopped broadcasting, and Max had fallen asleep as well. Suddenly, Max's head shot up and his ears perked up in response to something. He started growling and then barked in a persistent manner. Hazel was awoken by the barking and expressed her irritation at Max. However, he did not stop and did not move from his watchful position, keeping his gaze fixed on the front door.

Hazel got up and tried to convince Max to come to bed with her, but he refused her invitation. The dog was frantically attempting to get his point across. She reached out to grasp him by the collar, but Max became increasingly irritated. He ran towards the door and began aggressively scratching at it. Hazel had never seen him acting in such a manner before.

Hazel picked up her shotgun. A growing feeling of anxiety prompted her to move cautiously as she made her way toward the door. Max’s scratching and barking became much more frenzied. She placed her hand on the doorknob and turned it just enough to leave a small crack in the door. As soon as Max saw the door open, he dashed out of the house. Hazel swung the door open all the way and walked out while holding the shotgun.

Max had taken off running in the direction of the cornfield, eventually vanishing into the dense stalks. Hazel shouted at him to come back. It was impossible to see anything due to the darkness that pervaded the area.
